As first-time parents we were naturally nervous about anything to do with caring for our son, Ben. The thought of leaving him with a relative stranger for the bulk of the day was almost too much to bear. The fact that a professional nanny might know things about parenting that we didn’t was no comfort. We needed peace of mind. Then we heard about Karin Thomsen through a friend. We sent our nanny, Mieta, on a training course with her over a 4-week period. In short, this was one of the best decisions we’ve made. On completion of the course, Mieta seemed to be a more informed and competent carer than we were. What we though we knew about topics such as hygiene and making the house safe, turned out to be very superficial indeed. Mieta issued DIY instructions and wrote out shopping lists, and she didn’t rest until we had complied (we have the best-stocked first-aid kit in town). We also found that her playtime with Ben was not just random activity, but had clear educational and developmental thought behind it. This didn’t come from us. We received feedback from the course on a weekly basis and it gave us the opportunity to communicate our special needs in terms of Ben’s routine or housework priorities. The course also helped Mieta to plan her days so that she could combine housework and childcare efficiently. Mieta enjoyed the course thoroughly and was always excited to discuss the topics they covered. She found Karin to be an energetic tutor who presented the course with clarity and enthusiasm. We have no hesitation in recommending Super Nannies to any parent.

The hardest thing about having my baby was the thought of going back to work and handing over her care to a nanny. Once we had found and hired our current nanny, Fezeka, I booked her into a nanny training course and have been thrilled at the results. The benefits of the course are manifold, not only does it cover critical baby rearing skills and knowledge; it also helps to build the nanny’s confidence to care for your child. I was particularly grateful for the First Aid and Play modules. Besides her matric certificate Fezeka has no other formal qualifications and she was delighted at the opportunity to receive two certificates during the training (i.e. the overall course certificate and the First Aid certificate). The training materials are of a high quality and Fezeka was very complimentary about the trainers. I would not hesitate to send her on future courses to upgrade her skills. This really is a great manual/course. It clearly highlights the importance of play and provides the caregiver with plenty of interesting and easy ideas to encourage and stimulate play. There is a good balance of gross and fine motor activities as well as fun games for developing the various senses. I am happy to see that there is a chapter entirely dedicated to reading – this is a very important part of development and teaches so many vital skills. This kind of input will certainly encourage the development of the whole child.
