Nanny Training FAQ’s

Frequently asked questions by parents.

How long is the nanny training course?

The course covers four modules once a week over a four week period. This is to accommodate working parents who need to make alternative arrangements whilst their nannies or domestic workers are being trained. Also there is a lot to retain, so the timing allows the nannies to do their homework, review what they have learnt week by week and put it into practise.

What age should my child be in order to get the maximum benefit from the course?

The nanny training course material focuses from birth to 3 years of age. We also provide a nanny training  manual with detailed notes for the nanny to refer back to as your child grows so that they do not have to remember everything they learn immediately.

How many nannies or domestic workers do you train at a time?

Our maximum is 10 and minimum 4. We like to keep our classes small so we can concentrate on the needs of our learners.

Do you cover the issue of HIV in the family home?

Understanding and preventing the spread of HIV and TB is covered in the course content.

Does my nanny get a certificate?

Your nanny earns two certificates on the course. One is the nanny training certificate which is recognized by various recruitment agencies and a first aid certificate which is recognized by  the resuscitation council of South Africa and SETA.

Will my nanny understand, English is her second language and she is also illiterate?

This is our most common question. We have a diverse group of women from different cultures attending our workshops therefore our courses are taught in English to accommodate the entire group. The workshop is designed to be taught in a practical but fun manner so that our nannies can effectively grasp what is being taught.

Do I have to drop my nanny every time?

We ask that you drop her on the first day so that we can meet you and you can see where we are doing the training. Our training venues are situated near public transport and are on the taxi route so nannies can come by themselves.

Where do you offer the nanny training course?

We offer a varitey of nanny training courses in Cape Town, in the City and Southern Suburbs. We are looking at expanding into different areas once we find the right Super Trainer to join our Training and Franchise program.

Is your nanny training SETA Accredited?

We are in the process of getting SETA recognized. The well known and credible agencies recognize our agency and certificate. Our First Aid module is SETA accredited and parents my also claim Discovery Vitality Points if they attend a First Aid course.

Do you cover discipline?

We do not cover discipline in our course content as we have found that each family has its own ideas and methods on how to discipline their children.  I encourage the nannies to discuss this with their employer if the topic arises and we can suggest reading material from various helpful resources if it is requested.

Do you discuss routines in your workshop?

We discuss the importance of a routine and how each family will have their own routine and how it is important to follow the mother’s way. We are inspired by the Baby Sense and BBC Super Nanny techniques and are happy to discuss a specific technique like sleep issues upon request. We do not follow one discipline as routines and a mother’s choice can vary from a flexible routine like Baby Sense to a strict routine like Gina Ford.

How can I encourage my nanny to practice good hygiene?

We do cover all aspects of the importance of personal hygiene from washing hands to strong smelling body odour.  If a parent has a specific request not covered in the manual that they want mentioned, we can address it with the group as a whole so that none of the ladies are made to feel ashamed or embarrassed.

I would like my nanny to stimulate my child more, what do you offer?

Our last session covers the importance of play, milestones and activities suited to the various stages in a child’s development in the first three years.  We also cover the importance of reading books and listening to music with the overall emphasis on the child learning through play.  The nannies are given practical, fun and easy ideas to help the child learn through playing and to develop their fine and gross motor muscles.
